Horticulture
Yesterday in hort we were placing the left over rocks in place and moving them around to create the scene of our Japanese garden, we put in three planks of wood for stands for our bonsais, it was planks of wood on top of Oamaru stone. On the planks of wood we are carving our names written in Japanese. Jamie put rocks up and moulded them around the shit tanks because they are henious but we are figuring ways to make them less visable but they have to be open for health ventalation resons. We arent allowed to paint the walls for the Japanese garden which sucks. We are yet to make a water feauture and gather sand for the ground. Tia and I cleaned the walls of cobwebs and random ickys.

Hydroponics
- A method of growing plants using mineral nutrients instead of growing in soil
-The two main types of hydroponics are 'medium culture' and 'solution culture'. The medium culture method uses solid mediums for the roots to grow in , e.g perlite, gravel,
mineral wool or coconut husk. Solution culture doesnt use solid medium it uses mineral nutrients
-Plants grow faster with hydroponics and arent as touch and thick as they usually would be
Some Advantages
-No soil
-Reusable water
-Easier to harvest
-Faster
-Food isnt as tough and thick
A Disadvantage
-If any harm comes to the plants hydroponics system the plant will experience rapid death

Horticulture 15/3
15/3/2012
Yesterday (14/3) we had a pretty hands on day at horticulture,
When i arrived the class had started to make compost bins, joining 4 pieces of wood in a square and stacking 4 of them on top of each other to make big compost bins, the class had already planned to all go to the quarry to collect rocks for our Japanese garden but since me and Savou came late we couldnt all get in the van so Savou, Tia, Elisha, and i stayed back while the rest of the class went to get rocks and finished the compost bins. They brought back 1.7tonnes of rock from the quarry and Cory hosed all the crap off them on the trailer, so when i sat on the side of the trailer i was covered in shit. When the rocks were all hosed we did wheel barrow trips from the trailer to the Japanese Garden in the L Block. The big rocks that couldnt be lifted into the wheel barrow were put onto those box carrier trolley things. After lunch Jenae, Savou, Elisha, Cory, Jai, Dakota and I went to the quarry. It's the deeper than the sea, it was mean, looks like our rusty version of the grand canyon

After we got back from the quarry we did the wheel barrow trips again and while that was happening wet news paper was being layed down on our pond base so that when we layed the plastic over top roots from the ground didnt grow up through and brake the plastic causing the water to drain into the soil. Then the plastic was layed over top of the wet news paper and the little rocks were put around the outside of the pond to hold down the plastic and also for decoration. We put stepping stones in the pond too.
